In this role, Neilufar not only supported teachers, but tended to the land, alongside students, and hiked and camped with student groups. Since moving to Sequim in 2006, Neilufar has spent a lot of time connecting to nature through gardening, helping organic farmers, hiking, and camping. Living in a place between the mountains and sea allows for many mindfulness practices to be expressed through stewarding the land. The experience of engaging with nature through the eyes of students of all ages has always been a pleasure and a grounding practice. Neilufar builds community around the land by sharing their Aikido practice, meditation, empowerment self defense classes, and movement exercises with others. Aikido, a modern Japanese martial art, was something Neilufar discovered when attending Swarthmore College. She/They graduated with a degree in Physics and later an MA in Secondary Education for Mathematics and Physics from the University of Pennsylvania. Steve is also a mediation and dharma teacher who has been trained in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage, Karuna, and has completed the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach. Steve leads a weekly mindfulness class for adults where he teaches concepts of wisdom, compassion, and authenticity. He is working to expand conservation programs that incentivize private landowners to manage land with "bird friendly" practices. Recently, his work, in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service and other partners, has been used to support conservation and management of northern spotted owls, marbled murrelets, and songbird communities across the Pacific Northwest.
